A national Medicare analysis published in the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology reveals significant shifts in interventional radiology (IR) practices among radiologists from 2008 to 2023. The proportion of radiologists not engaged in IR work rose from one-third to half, while among those practicing IR, the share dedicating a majority of their work to IR increased from 12.6% to 18.5%. The study, led by the Harvey L. Neiman Health Policy Institute, indicates a growing concentration of IR-related tasks among those who do practice IR, particularly among younger radiologists. The evolution of IR as a specialty and the introduction of integrated IR/diagnostic radiology residency programs are cited as key factors influencing these trends. The findings highlight ongoing discussions regarding the optimal structural model for interventional radiologists within healthcare.
